Making Time
November 3rd, 2009 by admin No comments »It can be a slow old process, writing and all of its associated peculiarities. Often we make excuses for not having enough time for writing when the truth is that we just give time to other things – like TV. If we really want to do anything at all then we will. It’s all about choices and following them through. We do it all the time. I had a friend once who never had money for anything but then took two expensive holidays and bought a new car, so he did have money just not for most things. I once stood in queue behind a young mother who had asked the cashier for a bottle of booze and some cigarettes before she pondered he remaining finances with a a hefty sigh before resigning to the fact that she could afford nappies for her infant after all. It’s all a matter of priorities – isn’t it?
A poetic piece
October 7th, 2009 by admin 1 comment »Recently I went to a gig at the Prince Albert in Brighton to see an Irish singer called Brian Houston who was better than many of the big named bands out there. With just a mic and guitar he took us all by the hand for night of brilliant entertainment. With him was an American guy called Pierce Pettis who gave us his take on folk music. It was Pierce with his Alabama drawl, a real accent not the dodgy Hollywood one, that inspired me to write what I would would consider my best poem for years (goes to show how bad the rest have been).
So here is my short piece, cheers Pierce.
Talk Memphis
Crowded bars with dancing decks
Flowing hair on perfumed necks
T-shirts tight over lace edged bras
Whiskey and smokes our caviar
Down lover’s lane with another’s girl
Swimming heads passions unfurl
Loose embrace to radio’s tune
Down the trail of cheap perfume
A laugh a cry perhaps a tear
Regrets that linger o’er the years
Secrets – trust erodes
Ride on – rodeo
